An inaugural series of seven-aside soccer matches is aiming to raise more than $5000 for two local charities.
The brainchild of Morellofert owner David Morello, and Nutrano Citrus’ Richard Byllaardt, all funds raised through the event will be donated to The Lucas Foundation and Chances for Children.
To be held at Soccer Park from 7pm tomorrow night, a curtain-raiser game of ‘over 35s’ – and featuring representatives of both companies and suppliers – will kick off proceedings, followed by the Morellofert vs Nutrano Citrus main event.
Food and drink will also be available for those in attendance. David said the idea had been several months in the making, with organisers keen to turn the event into an annual fund-raiser.
“The local community has been extremely supportive of our business during the six years since its inception, and I feel as though it’s the right time to give support back to the community,” he said.
“The idea itself came about through a conversation between myself and Richard in July last year.
“We both have an interest in soccer and have played locally, and we thought why not organise a charity soccer game?
“We’ve managed to gain several $500 donations from many of our key product suppliers, including Jeffries, BioAg, Bowman Viticulture, Pasture Genetics, Agspec and Nutri Tech Solutions, with close to $4000 already raised.”
David said both charity games would be 40 minutes long.
“We’re going to play on a smaller pitch being seven people a side, and with the weather expected to be hot we’re going to play 20-minute halves to keep the games short and entertaining,” he said.
David encouraged community members to come down and enjoy the night.
“We’re expecting a crowd of around 100 people, but the more the merrier!” he said. ‘There will be a raffle on the night, and gold coin donations will also be taken to help get us to our fund-raising target.
“Hopefully we can get a big crowd and raise some valuable money for two very worthwhile charities.”
