WITH livestock returns on production at the highest levels in a generation, pastures are being renewed as farmers move to optimise their returns from livestock in meat, milk or fibre.
The genetic potential of livestock performance in modern herds and flocks can be limited by intake quality and availability.
Fortunately, at Pasture Genetics we evaluate and select optimal varieties, each individually suitable to the diverse environmental conditions that Australia encapsulates.
Our Research & Technical Services department, based at Penfield Research Station in South Australia, have released the very best, and commercially ready varieties that have resulted from our Forage Crop Programme – Moby Forage Barley and Outback Forage Oats. These two varieties form our XtraLeaf® product range.
Our XtraLeaf® forage cereals have been purpose bred for forage production and optimum forage quality. At Pasture Genetics, filling your winter feed gap has been our long-term goal. We’ve undertaken both quantitative and qualitative research to further understand the complexities of cereal grazing by livestock, ultimately helping you efficiently produce more meat, milk or fibre per hectare.
Importantly, we put our varieties to the test, through vigorous livestock grazing trials, ensuring that we are delivering the best varieties possible. These trials simulate a true commercial environment, grazing heavy 400 to 600 kilogram steers, emphasising performance, under the most punishing grazing pressure.
Moby Forage Barley establishes quickly. As an outstanding ‘first to graze’ option, it provides you with forage availability in the traditional winter feed gap.
Outback Forage Oats extend the forage production window through to late spring/early summer, providing ongoing consistent weight gains, when you might have previously run out of grazing pastures.
If you’re wanting faster establishment, lengthened grazing periods, and greater levels of overall production, then our XtraLeaf® product range is for you.
One of the things we’ve been focusing on is breeding medics. We demonstrate this through our strategic partnership with South Australian Research & Development Institute (SARDI), which will result in the release of a new variety in the near future. This innovative variety exhibits traits of added disease resistance, improved adaptability, increased forage production, and spineless pods.
Whilst on the subject of medics, we’re proud to say that Cavalier Spineless Burr Medic is the most widely sold variety in Australia, it’s the benchmark medic variety for grazing. It displays a fantastic ability to produce enormous amounts of feed, and hosts outstanding seed setting ability, even in the harshest of environments.
With quick market uptake and proven success, the grazing tolerant GTL®60 Lucerne is fast becoming Australia’s favourite lucerne.
GTL®60 Lucerne has not only proven itself through our Forage Crop Programme grazing trials, but in the field, with some commercial stands now five years old and producing high quality grazing and hay cuts; whilst maintaining strong plant populations per hectare in the vast dryland areas of Australia.
GTL®60 Lucerne is by far our most persistent lucerne. It offers you intensive grazing or high feed quality in the bale. It retains leaf through the drying and bailing process, offering greater flexibility to hay producers; and its quick recovery after defoliation, storing its energy in the crown, results in outright longevity.
We’re always working on upgrading and improving our seed coating facility, to be sure that our range of Goldstrike® seed treatments are the best they can be. We continue to wrap up the best genetic and chemistry packages with LongLife® rhizobia, to drive production and profitability in your paddock.
We understand that farmers are increasingly time poor, not having the ability to be efficiently inoculating on farm; seed is best pre-inoculated. Tonnes of our Goldstrike® treated seed is being sown Australia wide. Purchasing your seed pre-inoculated saves you time, and ensures the inoculation is most effective.
Our latest Goldstrike LongLife® XLR8™ seed treatment, that includes Poncho® Plus insecticide, is a significant advancement for a range of pastures.
Our entire range of premium proprietary lucerne comes standard with the Goldstrike LongLife® XLR8™ seed treatment. This protects against a range of pests including Redlegged Earth Mite, Cutworm and Lucerne Flea. Poncho® Plus also offers added establishment vigour in the early growth stage of the plant. These added seed treatments are a fantastic tool, allowing you to ensure pasture success.
As all farmers have experienced at one time or another, establishment failures can occur. At Pasture Genetics, we allow you to plant with peace of mind. That is why we offer our Establishment Guarantee® programme. This programme is available for the vital 30 day period after planting, and provides you with substantial savings should you need to replant. Pasture Genetics is the only forage company in Australia to offer Establishment Guarantee®. Plant knowing that you have our support.
